As the aerospace industry as a whole began to suffer beginning in early 2002, many aerospace manufacturing firms left the supply base. However, as the industry began to grow at historically high rates in 2004, due to the incredible demand for commercial, corporate as well as military jets and helicopters, the industry faced the predicament of not being able to produce these aircraft due to a lack of components.
At the same time, Michigan’s manufacturing base was experiencing a slowdown due to the automotive OEM’s refocusing their manufacturing efforts overseas. The result of this is that Michigan's manufacturing base now possesses; many of the most sophisticated and technologically advanced manufacturing facilities; one of the most talented and experienced pool of trained manufacturing workforce on the planet as well as a tremendous amount of unused capacity.
MAMA was specifically created to address the problem of the aerospace industry’s lack of available capacity by devoting Michigan’s manufacturing available capacity, advanced technology and expertise to create the industry’s premier supply base.
It is through the provision of these resources by MAMA’s members to the aerospace industries’ supply chain that MAMA can contribute to the overall ability of OEM’s to further expand their production levels and continue to grow their businesses – without having to address long lead times and/or ramp up periods for the necessary components.
